We understand that moving home can be stressful and can be a long process. When it comes to packing up your belongings, you shouldn’t leave everything to the last minute. The first thing you’ll want to do is make a checklist, but as we’re packing experts, we’re going to give you some pro tips on packing up your precious belongings to take at least a little bit of the stress away.
Top Tip #1 – Prioritise and organise
You’re not going to be able to unpack everything on the first moving day, meaning that you’re going to have to prioritise and label your boxes. Split things up into essentials and things that can wait a few more days to unpack.
It might be worth starting the packing as early as possible and leaving out a few plates, bowls, pieces of cutlery and necessary apparatus.
Top Tip #2 – Make sure you have a selection of smaller and larger moving boxes
You’ll need both large and smaller boxes for packing certain things. For example, you won’t want to pack fragile kitchen plates and cups in larger boxes where they become more susceptible to breakage.
You won’t want to put too much weight in one box, so it is a good idea to pack lighter items in larger boxes and the heavier items in small boxes. This packing tip will save you a lot of pain and frustration.
Here are some great packing box options:
- Smaller box: (9 x 9 x 9”)
- Large box: (18 x 12 x 12”)
- Large box: (18 x 13 x 13”)
Remember, using old boxes is risky business. Imagine picking a box full of your most prized possessions and the bottom falling out.
Top Tip #3 – Fill the empty gaps
When it comes to fragile items, you’ll likely hear things ‘clatter’ around inside the boxes when picking them up. This can be dangerous and leave your belongings vulnerable to breakage. Using old newspapers, bubble wrap and old rags to fills small gaps will secure the items, stopping them from moving around.
Top Tip #4 – Prepare your box of essentials
As we mentioned in our first tip, you’ll want a box of essentials but what does that box of essentials look like? You’ll likely spend the following day unpacking, so maybe the PlayStation shouldn’t be classed as an essential!
You’ll want to make sure you have the following easily available:
- Snacks, food and local takeaway menus (you might not want to cook after moving day)
- Can opener
- Eating utensils
- A couple of pots and pans
- Towels and dishcloths
- Cleaning materials
- Toiletries
- Baby supplies (if applicable)
- Pet supplies (if applicable)
- Instruction manuals for your appliances
- Toolbox and first aid kit
Top Tip #5 – Get the whole family involved
It can become a little more difficult if you have kids, so why not make it into a little game and get them involved? It doesn’t have to be a laborious task if you play a game of ‘how many teddies can we fit in the box?’
Remember to take your time and start your packing early to ensure you minimise the stress. Moving is stressful enough with changing your address with many different companies, arranging new broadband and setting up your utilities. We’re here to help ease the packing side of moving.
